» Feature Writer Jennifer Jensen - Freelance Professional Development--where?

This was a great article, listing several things I had not thought of in my professional development. As a freelance writer, most of mine is through trade journals (writer's magazines), a critique group, and a few conferences. As I head more into non-fiction, though, I could really use some help with negotiation skills. Can anybody suggest books, articles, or free/low cost ways to learn these?

Writing groups (critique group as yours is called)are a great way to grow professionally inexpensively. Also, videos you can rent or borrow from the library can be another source of professional development on the cheap.

One of my favorite books on women and anything financial is still The Secrets of Six Figure Women by Barbara Stanny. I have found many of the tips and techniques very eye opening and useful.

For a articles specifically on negotiation skills look for articles from the Harvard Business Review on negotiation. A good book on the subject (based on the Harvard Negotiation Project)is Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In by Roger Fisher

Hope that gets you started!

Jennifer:

There are lots of professional development courses available both online and presented live. Seminars are usually quick fixes and can provide some really useful information as a starting point - and if you search wisely they are relatively inexpensive.
