» Grandma07 - Resolutions

I guess I would have to say yes and no to this question. I stay away from New Year's resolutions as a whole, but try both professionally and personally, to stop periodically throughout the year to take stock of where I've been, where I am now and where I want to improve for the future.

In response to Resolutions posted by Grandma07:

I love to write out my goals. Ever since I found out that statistically you are more likely to achieve goals you have actually written out I make goal lists. Currently my goals are to maintain my certification as a registered massage therapist, to begin teaching childbirth education classes in the new town I live in, and to work towards promoting my free-lance writing more now that I've gotten my "feet wet" so to speak.

Blessings, Angela

As long as you have some mechanism to make sure that you are on a professional growth path - that is all that matters. Some find it helpful to write down goals and even come up with a step-by-step action plan to achieve them. Others, like you, seem to make things happen without all of this structure. Happy New Year!

In response to Goal Setting posted by AngEngland:

I, like you, believe in the power of putting a plan to paper. I find setting mini-deadlines along the path to achieving goals not only keeps me (and my clients)on track but helps to reduce the feeling of overwhelm when the goal is a big one.

I have also found that if clients spend time and energy developing SMART goal statements and determining their top 5 career goals - then they are more open to opportunities when they come. I attribute this to embedding the goals/values subconsciously and consciously so that when an opportunity presents itself they are more likely to say "Hey, that will help me attain my goal!" or "Hey, that fits with my values!". Whereas previous to these exercises they may have let the opportunity go by unnoticed.

Happy New Year and good luck with the goals you've mentioned. Come back at the end of 2007 and let us know how you did!

Thank you for a well written informative article.

I'm also in favor of writing goals down. Life can be too dynamics and are lives are constantly in flux to remember, "hey, what did I write?" I'm always writing goals down however, but the effect of New Year's Resolution is more like a another chapter in my life's handbook of where I want to go. It's my time to ask myself whether the goals I've written all along during the previous year are really what I want to pursue.

Hello Dorit,

I like your analogy of annual resolution setting as a way to create a chapter in your book called life. I agree that this is a great approach. Have a look at my latest article I posted tonight as it talks to this point. http://trainingpd.suite101.com/article.c... I also plan to post a blog suggesting possible resolutions.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Joni
