Creating Success

A Series of Short- and Long-Term Goals

Success is about setting goals and working your way towards them systematically. Here's where to start.

The majority of people believe that ‘Success’ is only when the biggest goal is achieved—i.e. a six figure income, being a millionaire or multimillionaire, having that dream house or car, etc. This concept is self-defeating as it negates all the other ‘successes’ one has achieved—graduating from middle school, high school, college, masters degree, doctorate, first job, first promotion, first car, first home, etc. These successes are as important as your desired long-term successes in life.

Whether you focus on your short- or long-term goals, you need to hone in on every minor detail which has a great deal of significance when viewed in the context of your ambitions and long-term goals.

You need to think and act industriously, creating meticulous plans and leaving no element of your pursuit unchecked. Details you might have dismissed as unimportant need your attention to ensure that you make the most of the advantages available to you and are able to advance you as quickly as you want to achieve your goals.

The more diligent you are while pursuing your long-term ambitions, the more likely it is that you will be able to achieve each of the related short-term goals you have set for yourself. Many people have difficulty immersing themselves in the more mundane aspects of the goal-realization process because they lose sight of the value of the small and often times minor dull tasks. In choosing to pay attention to even the smallest details associated with your journey of achievement, make certain that your understanding of the big picture never distracts you from the individual elements of your coveted goal.

Recognize that your actions and attitudes, however grounded can have a major impact on your ability to realize your dreams—a.k.a. goals. The industriousness with which you approach the tasks each day will ultimately propel you to achieve your long-term objectives.

Goal setting for Success includes:

A Vision/Dream/Goal

In your mind, know exactly what you want/desire. Write it on paper—continue to hone your vision/dream/goal statement until it is exactly what you want/desire.

A Plan

Develop a plan to achieve your goal.

A Timeline/Deadline: Develop a day by day schedule. Include the steps to achieve each day.

Action Steps: Each day focus on only a few steps at a time—without worrying about the others.

Motivation: Maintain your initiation, direction, intensity and persistence.

Avoid Procrastination: Procrastination is the most frequent self-sabotage.

Ask for Help/advice as needed: Ask for advice. Ask for assistance. Ask for support and encouragement along the way—friends, family, colleagues, mentors, et al. Also, cultivate good resources.

Persistence: If something does not turn out just right, analyze it and develop a plan to move around it, adapt, regroup and move on. Avoid letting one step back stop you from moving forward.

Learning Curve: In the beginning, you might not know every thing you need to know. By taking things one step at a time, you will learn what you need to learn and you will grow more confident with each successful step.
