Self promotion techniques include various ways to get notice, be remembered and produce opportunities.

There are many ways to self promote. To see the best results, try a combination of many self promotion techniques. It may take time and effort, but the pay off can be huge.

Get Good References

Select your references wisely. You want people that know you well but also will take the time to think about how you can best be presented depending on the situation. For example, they want to read the job description before phoning the recruiter back or writing a reference letter. Asking potential references to write a reference letter is a good way to find out what they would say if phoned for a reference and if the skills and talents you want to highlight are the ones they want to highlight. References also include getting testimonials or quotes from clients who were impressed by your work.

Getting Media Attention

Getting noticed in the media is not easy, but with some effort and strategy, it can happen. Hire a PR person to write a few press releases for you and create a media universe i.e. a list of potential media contacts. Send press releases and pitch story ideas to these contacts and begin to build a relationship with them. The media likes a story where the underdog has a fighting chance, a miracle or surprise has lead to a powerful emotional reaction or something that demonstrates a benefit to a large group of people. Send pictures with the press release to make the reporter’s job even easier.

Volunteer in the Spotlight

Offer to give a talk or demonstration to a group of people that will help spread your message. Many clubs and organizations look for interesting guest speakers for their monthly meetings. The more exposure you can get the better and in time you may be able to get paid speaking gigs.

Business Cards, Head Shots and Biographies

Spend some money on good quality business cards as they make a strong first impression. Cheap, poorly produced business cards will not instill confidence or portray professionalism. Head shots (photographs of you face) are also important and should be taken professionally. Often, an organization asking you to speak will need a head shot and a Bio. A biography details your work experience, credentials, and accomplishments and usually includes a bit about your personality.

Attend Networking Events

Make sure you get out to industry events and make contacts. The best form of advertising is word of mouth. If people can connect your products, services or talents with your personality, the chances that you will get word of mouth referrals are higher.

Increasing your exposure will bring new opportunities that you may not have expected. It can bring great excitement and charge up your career!
