If you feel that you are not working to your potential, what are you doing about it? Take the following quiz to help you determine if you are actively furthering your career or if you are more talk than action.
Answer yes or no to the following statements:
- I am fully aware of and take full advantage of all of the training and development opportunities that my company offers.
- I look for opportunities to challenge myself and stretch beyond my comfort zone.
- I have identified skills that I need to work on and have actively pursued training and development opportunities to improve these skills.
- I have taken the time to identify my top 10 skills and have assessed how much (or how little) I am using these skills.
- I have had discussions with my supervisor about my career path and career development.
- I have a mentor that I respect to give me guidance and reassurance.
- I have clearly articulated my career goals and have created five year career development plans for the remainder of my working years.
- I volunteer to expose myself to new learning opportunities.
- I seek out free lectures and networking opportunities.
- I keep up-to-date with advances in my industry.
- I dedicate time each week for reading professional materials.
- I have looked into or practiced innovative learning options such as audio books, online courses or exchanges (swapping jobs and living arrangements with someone in another country or city).
- I learn as much as possible from the mistakes I make.
- I’ve developed my soft skills as much as my hard skills.
If you answered yes to 1-3 of these statements: You need to take your career development more seriously if you want to advance within your industry. Look for ways to improve your commitment to learning and growth.
If you answered yes to 4-6 of these statements: You clearly are trying to develop yourself professionally but there are many options you’ve yet to apply to your career development.
If you answered yes to 7-11 of these statements: Bravo! You take your professional development seriously.
If you answered yes to 12 or more of these statements: Are you sleeping? Are you eating properly? Do you have a social life? If yes, then you are working on your professional development while keeping a work/life balance. If not, then evaluate to see if you are a workaholic and try to find a better balance.
