Choosing between taking a pay cut verses looking for a new job requires careful consideration of the reasons for the cut and future market potential.

Difficult times require difficult decisions. Some companies, in an attempt to ride the economic downturn have resorted to asking staff to take a pay cut. Staff then have to consider whether to accept the pay cut or start looking for another position to maintain the same level of pay.

Temporary Slump in the Market

If a review of the market conditions produces strong evidence that this is a temporary slump and there is every indication that the market will improve over time, it helps to justify the decision to accept the pay cut. Analyzing market trends in addition to considering company strategic plans and the track record of senior management can all provide support for a decision to a wage reduction.

Company Promises to Reinstate Salaries

A key factor in a decision to take a pay cut is if the company promises to reinstate salaries when the market improves. Of course, the proof is in the payment but a sincere promise, especially one well document in internal company communications can be a reassuring element in the decision to accept the pay cut.

Across the Board Salary Cuts

Pay cuts that are across the board i.e. from front line workers to executives show a company’s commitment to working as a holistic force to improve the overall bottom line. If certain departments or certain segments of the employee population are asked to accept reductions in salaries and other areas are exempt, it can lead to disgruntled employees who feel unfairly treated. This sort of inequality can eat away at morale and create a toxic company culture.

Labour Market Prospects

If labour market prospects outside the company, especially if the industry as a whole is experiencing financial difficulties, it may be wise to stay put and ride out the slump in the market. Moving to another company may only move the problem. If company loyalty is a strong corporate value, there is a better chance that those that remain with the company will be rewarded.

Budget Considerations

The impact on personal finances is a major consideration in the decision to take a pay cut. If a person can tap into saving to top up salaries or find expenses that can be reduced during the period of the salary reduction, it can lessen the financial impact.

Many factors need to be considered when determining whether to take a pay cut and remain employed at a company or look for a new job. Demonstrations by the company that they value employees such as promising to reinstate salaries and making the cuts across the board can be a sign that riding out the storm with the company may be the right decision. A decision to take the pay cut is easier to make if budget allows, this is seen as a temporary slump in the market and prospects outside of the company are slim to none. During an economic downturn, tough decisions are sometimes the right thing to do.
