In business and life, effective Interactions help in achieving goals. Learn how to maximize personal and commercial success by communicating better.

“Good communications skills are vital to the growth of any business and they are also essential for the success of every individual.” Anne Lee Draycott, expert in the field of communication, has helped many clients to make the most of their talents.

CEO of AMD Communications, she teaches a wide range of people from all walks of life techniques to overcome problems such as poor voice production, nervousness, lack of clarity and shyness.

The Ten Cardinal Rules

In a recent interview, Anne Lee Draycott, set out the ten cardinal rules for better communication:

  1. Know who your audience is and what they want to hear
  2. Focus on what they want – use the word "you" quite often
  3. Speak clearly with good grammar and diction
  4. Make eye contact with your audience
  5. Be confident and relaxed
  6. Be presentable, but not overdressed or over made-up
  7. Remember that “they” are probably just as nervous as you
  8. Use diaphragm breathing to calm your nerves
  9. Do role-plays to practice ahead of the public performance
  10. Get coaching if you have difficulties with any of the above!

Better Communication for the Individual

Anne Lee Draycott went on to explain why it is important for each person to improve their interactions;

"Nowadays there is more pressure on the individual to be able to communicate effectively. For example, it is not unusual to have multiple interviews in order to obtain a good job. People who are shy and lack confidence can be helped to overcome these problems."

The sort of mistakes that they make include mumbling, speaking to their feet, speaking too fast with no pauses and failing to listen to the questions. This is often caused by feelings of stress and inadequacy. However these issues can be addressed and overcome with correct training.

Who Benefits from Communications Training?

Anne Lee Draycott believes that everybody can benefit from training, including aspiring politicians, interviewees, salesmen who do presentations to potential customers, lecturers, teachers and trainers. She believes that communications training should be on every school curriculum and included with every university course for people who are going to interact with the public.

What Coaching Teaches

Anne Lee Draycott explained that communications training helps people to conquer their nervousness at facing a panel or an audience. Clients are given the opportunity to do role-plays, for example, which enables them to get over their problems ahead of the public presentation.

Techniques such as relaxation help to calm the nervous system and reduce adrenaline (the fright or flight hormone) production. The use of video equipment can facilitate self-critiquing. There are many other ways to improve the public persona.
